What Are Epoxy Floor Coatings?

Epoxy floor coatings are resin-based systems designed to bond to properly prepared concrete surfaces. When installed correctly, epoxy creates a durable, seamless floor that resists abrasion, moisture intrusion, oil, and common household or commercial chemicals.

Benefits of Epoxy Floor Coatings

  • Strong adhesion to properly prepared concrete

  • Durable surface resistant to wear and impact

  • Chemical and stain resistance

  • Easy to clean and maintain

  • Cost-effective flooring solution for long-term use

Where Epoxy Flooring Works Best

  •  Residential garage floors

  • Workshops and home gyms

  • Commercial garages and service areas

  • Warehouses and utility spaces

  • Light industrial environments

Our Epoxy Floor Installation Process

  1. Concrete is mechanically ground to remove contaminants and open the surface.
  2. Cracks and surface defects are repaired as needed.
  3. Epoxy base coat is applied for proper adhesion.
  4. Decorative flake, metallic epoxy, or solid-color finish is installed.
  5. Protective topcoat is applied for added durability.

This process is critical to preventing peeling, delamination, and premature failure.

Epoxy Floor Finish Options

  • Full flake broadcast systems

  • Solid-color epoxy floors

  • Quartz epoxy systems

  • Designer metallic finishes

  • Clear sealed concrete finishes

Epoxy Floor Coating FAQs

Please reach us at drew@ocdcoatings.com if you cannot find an answer to your question.

Epoxy floor coatings are resin-based systems that chemically bond to properly prepared concrete. Once cured, they create a seamless, durable surface that resists wear, chemicals, stains, and moisture, making them ideal for garages, workshops, and commercial spaces.

Epoxy is thicker, slower curing, and commonly used as a base coat. Polyaspartic coatings cure faster, offer superior UV stability, and are often used as topcoats. Many systems use epoxy combined with a polyaspartic or polyurea topcoat for best performance.

When professionally installed and properly maintained, epoxy floors can last 10–20 years in residential garages and longer in controlled commercial environments. Longevity depends heavily on surface prep, traffic, and maintenance.

Existing coatings are evaluated and either removed or properly prepared to ensure proper adhesion. While some coatings can be bonded to, we typically recommend full removal whenever possible to ensure the strongest bond and longest-lasting results. Every project is evaluated on a case-by-case basis.

Epoxy floors can be customized with slip-resistant additives. Flake and quartz systems naturally improve traction, while clear topcoats can be adjusted to meet safety needs for garages, commercial spaces, and industrial environments.

Epoxy systems typically require longer cure times than fast-cure coatings. Light foot traffic is often allowed within 24 hours, with full cure achieved over several days. Designer metallic floors will require longer installation and cure times.

Properly installed epoxy systems are designed to resist hot tire pickup. Failures are usually caused by poor surface preparation or moisture issues, not the epoxy itself.

Yes. Commercial-grade epoxy systems are designed to withstand heavy vehicles, equipment, and foot traffic when installed over properly prepared concrete.

Epoxy coatings resist oil, gasoline, brake fluid, cleaners, and many chemicals, making them ideal for garages, workshops, and commercial facilities.

Concrete preparation typically includes diamond grinding, crack and joint repair, and moisture testing. Proper preparation is the most important step in achieving long-term performance.

Epoxy floors require minimal maintenance. Regular sweeping and occasional mopping with a neutral PH cleaner will keep the surface looking clean and performing well.
